Meme generator

Bring a picture, type two lines and get the thick white lettering with a dark outline that memes are known for. Prefer an uncovered image? Put the words on white strips instead.

How to use it

  1. Drop a picture on the page or press ‘Choose a file’. There is no template library: the picture is always yours.
  2. Type the ‘Top text’ and the ‘Bottom text’. Leave one empty if the joke needs only one line.
  3. Choose a ‘Style’, either ‘On the picture’ or ‘On white bars’. Let ‘Fit text size automatically’ do the sizing, or set ‘Text size’ yourself.
  4. Press ‘Add text’ for extra captions. Drag each one into place, or select it and nudge it with the arrow keys.
  5. Pick JPG or PNG under ‘Save as’, press ‘Create meme’, then ‘Download’.

What it does

  • The classic lettering

Heavy white lettering edged in black. The font is Impact where your device has it, then Arial Black, then another bold sans-serif. Captions in Korean, Japanese or Chinese switch to a heavy font installed on your device.

  • Text that sizes itself

With ‘Fit text size automatically’ on, each line is wrapped and sized to fit across the picture, and the biggest size is capped so a two-word caption does not swallow the photo. Move the ‘Text size’ slider and automatic sizing switches off, so the number is yours.

  • Caption strips

‘On white bars’ leaves the picture untouched and builds a white strip over it and under it for the words. A strip appears only for a line you filled in, and the text starts out black with no outline.

  • Extra text you can drag

‘Add text’ creates a box with its own wording, a size slider and a ‘Remove text’ button. Drag it into place, whether you use a mouse, a finger or a stylus. The arrow keys move it by 1% of the picture, and Shift with an arrow moves it by 5%.

  • Colors and outline

Text color and outline color have their own pickers, and ‘Outline width’ runs from 0 to 10. ‘ALL CAPS’ is on to start; it changes only letters that have capitals.

  • JPG or PNG, picked for you

A PNG, GIF, BMP or SVG original starts with PNG selected, anything else with JPG, and you can switch either way. With ‘On the picture’ saved as PNG, the see-through parts of your image stay see-through. A JPG is saved at quality 92.

Good to know

Short wins. Three or four words per line still read at thumbnail size, while a long sentence shrinks until nobody can read it. Open with the situation in the top line and land the punchline below. On a busy background, raise ‘Outline width’ so the letters hold their edge, or move the words onto white strips and leave the image alone.

Your picture keeps its own pixel size, and the text is drawn on top of it; the strips make the file taller instead. Only a result above 16.7 megapixels or 16,383 px on one side is scaled down, and the line under the preview tells you. The file is named like yourfile-meme.jpg and carries no EXIF or GPS data. Stick to pictures you are free to share.

Reading, drawing and saving all happen on your device, so you can test captions on a photo that is meant to stay private.

Questions and answers

How do I put a caption on a photo?

Open the photo, fill in ‘Top text’ and ‘Bottom text’ and press ‘Create meme’. The preview already shows the finished look; the button only writes the file.

Does imgglide have meme templates?

No. You bring the picture, whether it is a phone photo, a screenshot or something you drew.

Why does the lettering look different on another device?

The preview uses whichever of Impact, Arial Black or a bold sans-serif the device has. Once you save, the words are part of the pixels, so the saved meme looks the same everywhere.

Does it work with Korean or Japanese captions?

Yes. Those characters are drawn in a heavy font from your device. ‘ALL CAPS’ leaves them alone, because it only affects letters that have capitals.

Can I put a caption somewhere other than the top and bottom?

Yes. Press ‘Add text’, type the words and drag the box over the picture. Each extra box has its own size, and ‘Remove text’ deletes it.

Does the saved meme get a watermark or lose quality?

No watermark is added. The picture keeps its pixel size and a JPG is written at quality 92. Choose PNG for a copy with no compression loss at all.
