Make a profile picture from a selfie

Begin with any photo that shows your face, close-up or head to toe. The cut-out, the light and the skin adjustments all happen on your device, and the picture you save is already cropped for a chat app, a feed or a story.

Add one photo with your face — a selfie, upper-body or full-length photo all work (JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC).

Tips for the best result
  • Face a window or soft light. Backlight is fixed automatically, but light from the front looks most natural.
  • Hold the camera at eye level. For a full-length picture, stand 2–3 m away with your feet in the frame; the background and shadow then fit best.
  • Keep your head and shoulders in the picture with a little space above the hair.
  • Look straight at the camera with a relaxed expression. Sunglasses and suits fit a face looking straight ahead best.
  • A plain background makes the cut-out cleaner.

Your photo stays on this device. Only the AI model files (about 18 MB the first time, up to 22 MB more for clothes, watch and shoes) and the backgrounds you pick are downloaded from this site.

Your files are processed on your own device and never uploaded.

How to use it

  1. Add a photo with ‘Choose a file’, drop it on the page or paste it. On a phone, ‘Take a selfie’ opens the camera. Half-length and full-length shots work as well as selfies.
  2. In the ‘Background’ tab, flip through the categories, from ‘Top picks’ and ‘Studio’ to beaches, cities and landmarks, and tap a thumbnail. ‘Blurred’, ‘Transparent’, ‘My picture’ and a color of your choice sit under ‘Basic & my photo’.
  3. Open ‘Face’ to see the retouching already set for your photo. Nudge any of the twelve sliders, pick a makeup style and a lip shade, and keep an eye on the ‘Face kept’ meter if you want to stay close to the original.
  4. Switch to ‘Makeover’ and try a ‘One-tap makeover’, or dress up one piece at a time: hair color, clothes, a suit, sunglasses, earrings, a necklace, a watch and shoes.
  5. Set the look under ‘Mood’ and the crop under ‘Framing’. ‘Hold for original’ shows your untouched photo for as long as you keep it pressed.
  6. Pick the destination in ‘Where will you use it?’, then a size and a format, and press ‘Save picture’. A phone also offers ‘Share’, which hands the result to another app.

What it does

  • 284 real photos behind you

Beaches and resorts, yachts and marinas, mountains and forests, flower fields, cities at night, world landmarks, cafés and concert stages. On top of those come 20 studio backdrops in solid, painted, pastel, gradient and bokeh styles. Each photo credits its photographer and links to its source, and all of them are public domain or CC0.

  • A cut-out that fits the scene

Once you are cut out, your brightness and color are pulled toward the background, your outline picks up the scene's light, and your eye level lands on its horizon. The backdrop is blurred more behind a close-up and only lightly behind a full-length shot, where a soft shadow also falls under your feet. An outline slider runs from softer to crisper.

  • Touch-ups sized to you

Amounts are set by measuring the face, light and skin in your own photo, so two people never get the same preset. Twelve sliders cover smoothing, spots, dark circles, eyes, teeth, lips, even light and face shape. Shape changes stay small, and the ‘Face kept’ meter reports how much of your original face is left; 90% or more looks natural.

  • Themes and single pieces

Thirteen themes, from ‘Vegas night’ and ‘Tycoon’ to ‘Hawaii vacation’, swap the background, the mood, the clothes and the accessories at once, and every part stays editable. Or go one piece at a time: eleven hair colors, recolored clothes, a suit with or without a tie, sunglasses (four shapes, five lens tints), earrings, necklaces, a watch and shoe colors.

  • Mood and framing

Twelve moods, from Cool and Vivid to Vintage, Dramatic and Black & white, each with a strength slider. Separate sliders handle face light, brightness, contrast, warmth and a vignette. Framing offers face, head and shoulders, upper body and full length, with your position, a zoom from 50% to 250% and an eyes-level straighten option.

  • Exact pixel sizes

    A square saves at 1080 × 1080 or 2048 × 2048, 4:5 at 1080 × 1350, 3:4 at 1080 × 1440 and 9:16 at 1080 × 1920. The phone wallpaper preset is 2048 × 3641. JPG, PNG and WebP are on offer, and a transparent background turns a JPG choice into PNG.

Good to know

A profile picture usually shows up as a small circle, so a clear face and even light do more than any effect. ‘Show round crop’ previews the circle while you frame the shot, and the options in the ‘Where will you use it?’ group switch the shape for you: a round-cropped square for profile slots, 4:5 for feed posts, 9:16 for stories and wallpapers.

Everything is done to your own photo, not to a generated person. Hair and clothes are recolored, the suit and the accessories are drawn on, and makeup changes color only. The shape sliders are small on purpose. Clothes, watch and shoe options also need two body-finding models, about 16 MB and 6 MB, downloaded the first time you use them, and a note explains when a piece cannot be placed, for example when sleeves cover the wrists.

The background photos come from Wikimedia Commons and are in the public domain or CC0, and the page credits the photographer of the one you use. A background downloads only when you pick it. Passports and ID cards are a different job: use the ID photo maker on this site, because offices reject composites and retouching.

Questions and answers

How do I swap just the background?

Choose a scene, then pick ‘None’ in the ‘Face’ tab and turn off the automatic light and color fix. Your skin and exposure then stay as photographed, apart from the blending you can dial down with the match slider.

Can the background be see-through?

Pick ‘Transparent’ under ‘Basic & my photo’. PNG and WebP keep the transparency, and a JPG choice is switched to PNG.

What if there are several people in my photo?

The largest face is the one used for retouching and framing, and a note says how many faces were found.

Which kind of photo gives the best result?

Soft light on your face from the front, the camera at eye level, head and shoulders in view with a little room above your hair, and a plain wall behind you. For a full-length picture, stand 2–3 m back with your feet in the frame.

How big is the file I save?

Sizes follow the short side: 1080 px or 2048 px. A photo with fewer pixels than the frame needs is enlarged, and when that is noticeable the page states the factor, so a closer or larger photo gives a sharper result.

What gets downloaded, and is my photo uploaded?

The photo stays on your device. What downloads is AI model files, about 18 MB on the first visit and up to 22 MB more for clothes, watch or shoes, plus each background you pick.
