Transparent areas become white in JPG.

Your files are processed on your own device and never uploaded.

How to use it

  1. Click ‘Choose files’ and add your JPG photos, or drop them onto the page.
  2. PNG is already selected under ‘Convert to’, and there is no ‘Quality’ slider for it, so just click ‘Convert’.
  3. Download the PNGs one by one, or all together with ‘Download all (ZIP)’.

Good to know

A JPG is compressed again every time it is edited and saved, so detail wears away round after round. A PNG is lossless: open it, paint, crop, add text, save, and nothing more is lost. That makes a PNG a sound working copy for a long editing session, and the right file for any site or app that insists on PNG.

Set your expectations, though. The PNG holds the picture as it looks now, JPG artifacts included; it does not add detail back. It cannot be transparent either, because a JPG has no see-through areas to carry over (the Remove background tool can cut a subject out). And for a photo it will usually be several times larger, so send the JPG, not the PNG, by email.

Questions and answers

Will the picture look sharper as a PNG?

No. The PNG copies the pixels the JPG has now, flaws included. What you gain is that further edits and saves will not degrade it.

Can I get a transparent background this way?

No, because a JPG has no transparent pixels to carry over. Use Remove background to cut the subject out; it saves a transparent PNG.

Why is the PNG so much bigger than the JPG?

JPG throws detail away to save space, while PNG keeps every pixel. For photographs the gap is large, and it is the price of a lossless copy.
